Chaos Theory Explained
Well into my 70s, I’m still asking the question “why?” That’s because we live in a chaotic, unpredictable universe. Hidden among the birds, trees and fields in my impressionistic/surrealist painting, “Chaos Theory Explained,” are patterns that influence seemingly disconnected events. The bird propels itself through the sky, creating wind currents, which touch everything in their path...and beyond. What’s occurring in this scene is a depiction of Chaos Theory, which states that within the apparent randomness of complex systems (example: flapping wings) there are underlying patterns and interconnections. Chaos Theory, as explained in 1963 by meteorologist and mathematician Edward Lorence, describes the impact of forces on the motion of objects…such as how a seagull’s wings has the capacity to change the earth’s atmosphere, resulting in huge shifts in weather patterns, including hurricanes.
